JPEG Pleno Workshop on Emerging Coding Technologies for Plenoptic Modalities Announcement
Context
JPEG Pleno offers a standard framework for representing new imaging modalities like texture-plus-depth, light field, point cloud, and holographic imaging. These imaging techniques represent light inspired by the plenoptic function, regardless of the model used to capture or create the content.
The JPEG Pleno standard integrates its various components to maximize their synergies and dependencies, making the whole system more effective than the sum of its parts. This holistic approach means JPEG Pleno is not just a set of efficient coding tools for compression. Instead, it serves as a comprehensive representation framework that supports advanced functionalities for plenoptic data manipulation, metadata, random access, interaction, and various file formats. It also ensures privacy protection, ownership rights, and security.
From capturing the real or synthesized world to replicating it, the JPEG Pleno framework harmoniously integrates all necessary tools into a single system. This system represents the same visual reality while accommodating different modalities, requirements, and functionalities.
Recently, the JPEG Pleno Learning-based Point Cloud Coding and JPEG Pleno Holography have been promoted to International Standards. Meanwhile, JPEG Pleno Light Field is progressing towards a second edition with a higher performance 4D Transform Mode. Additionally, the standardization of quality assessment procedures for plenoptic modalities has begun, with JPEG Pleno Quality Assessment – Light Fields being the first part to address this area.
This workshop aims to engage the broader scientific and technology community in addressing the future challenges the JPEG committee faces in the domain of immersive media technologies. Experts engaged in research on topics of Volumetric Content, Light-Field Coding, Point Cloud Coding and Quality of Experience for Immersive Experiences will speak on key advancements in the field and the latest research outcomes and directions.
