JPEG Pleno Light Field
Light fields are typically produced by capturing a scene either via an array of cameras or by a single and more compact sensor augmented by microlenses, to sample individual rays of light emanating from different directions. Part 2 of the JPEG PLENO standard aims at standardizing light field coding technologies and associated metadata to enable for example the camera(array) calibration. The standard which is currently under development not only intends to provide coding tools for texture data but also for disparity and depth information as well. A large range of use cases is being addresses covering applications chains from and E2E perspective, i.e. capture, Mezzanine, storage and distribution formats are considered. The codec framework is envisaged to be constructed in a modular way such that requirements of the use cases can be addressed with a maximum flexibility.
